History

The Hailey Cabin is located on a bluff overlooking the War Eagle River in the splendor of the Ozark mountains.  The first part of the cabin was built in the 1940's and consisted of a living room and kitchen (each with fireplaces), and a bedroom and bathroom.  In 1951, it was bought by Newton Lafayette and Bea Faye Hailey and a concrete porch overlooking the river and substantial landscaping were built.  In 1976 a large back porch and second bathroom with a full bath was added to accommodate the growing legions of grandchildren.

As a child, I remember fondly playing on the floor while the adults chattered on about nothing I cared about, swimming in the river, playing kick-the-can with my siblings and cousins, and going down to the mill to get some candy.  The War Eagle Fair was always a lot of fun too, even if that's when all the "foreigners" invaded our area.

Now the cabin is taken care of by the second generation, N.L. Hailey and Jo Belle Hopper.  The grandchildren are having children of their own, as people are wont to do, and the Hailey cabin continues to be one of my favorite places in the world.
